Myofascial Release Therapy
Fascia is a specialized tissue, connective tissue, of the body which has a white appearance like the white covering on an orange on the underneath its skin. Just like the fascia holds the orange into an orange shape, our fascia gives us a human shape, and the ease (or effort if restricted) in our motion.
Our fascia is very densely woven, covering every muscle, bone, nerve, artery, and vein, and each our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord.
The fascial system is not just a system of separate coverings, but it is one continuous structure that exists from head to toe; fingertip to fingertip, without interruption. It will get interrupted during surgeries, traumas, & chronic holding patterns. This tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When stressed, it tightens up. Together the physical therapist and client, can begin to sense the restricted area and that each part of the body is connected to every other part via the fascial system, like the yarn in a sweater.
Myofascial Release is a hands-on bodywork technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into restricted myofascial connective tissue eliminating pain and restoring motion. Each MFR session is performed directly on skin without oil or cream. This enables the physical therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate a release of the fascia.
FAQs for Myofascial Release Therapy

There will be a review of your medical and accident history followed by an examination of your posture and range of motion. The therapist will use that information to begin your session.
It is recommended that women wear a sports bra and shorts and men wear shorts. The goal is to have as much skin exposure yet remain covered during the session. Clients may experience naturally occurring movements or be moved so the coverage maintains a feeling of privacy.
As the therapist assesses your musculoskeletal system and finds fascial restrictions, she will maintain a hold with pressure into the skin and the layers below to allow for a release of the tension. Clients may experience warmth, tingling, movement, stretch of skin and sometimes even emotional releases. Sessions vary from person to person and from session to session. text goes here
